TFCL Competitive Ranks

Have you ever wondered why TFCL uses three divisions rather than the five found in other leagues? Let's break our system down and explain why we opted for the ESEA-style approach to competitive ranking.

Open Entry Tier

Open is the foundation of TFCL. It includes every skill level in one place which allows new teams, returning players, and mixed experience rosters to compete together without placement barriers. TFCL does not restrict players by class, so teams are free to build rosters however they choose.

Invite Elite Tier

Invite is the highest level of TFCL competition. It is reserved for the strongest teams in North America with proven results, discipline, and elite coordination. Invite will always have a flow of new teams and players entering from Intermediate, and only the teams that can consistently win at the highest level remain. If a team cannot keep up, they move down. Invite is for the best of the best, and failing to win against the best means you're not the best. Simple as that.

Move Up System

TFCL is built around constant movement and competitive pressure. The top teams in each division earn a free pass into the next division, ensuring that Invite always has a steady flow of new teams and rising talent. Intermediate champions automatically advance into Invite, and if they can hold their own, they stay. If they cannot, they move back down. This keeps Invite fresh, competitive, and filled with teams that have proven they belong at the top.

  • Best Open team: Moves to Intermediate next season at no cost.
  • Best Intermediate team: Moves to Invite for free.
  • Entire roster: All player fees for the next season are fully covered.
  • Invite stays dynamic: New teams enter every season, and only the strongest remain.

Move Down System

TFCL does not restrict players by class or role, but we do enforce competitive balance. If a team cannot keep up with the division they are placed in, they will be moved down to ensure fairer matches and a healthier competitive environment.

  • Lowest performing Invite teams: Moved to Intermediate for the next season.
  • Lowest performing Intermediate teams: Moved to Open for the next season.
  • Lowest performing Open teams: Remain in Open, as it is the entry division.
  • Purpose: Maintain competitive integrity, reduce one‑sided seasons, and help teams rebuild.

Sandbagging Prevention

TFCL’s ranking structure makes sandbagging extremely difficult. Because top teams are automatically pushed upward and struggling teams are moved downward, there is no stable place for a strong team to hide in a lower division. Any roster that dominates Open or Intermediate will be promoted, and any roster that cannot compete in Invite will be sent back down. The system naturally filters teams into the division where they truly belong.

  • Strong teams cannot stay low: Dominating Open or Intermediate forces an automatic move up.
  • Invite is earned: Only teams that can consistently win at the top remain there.
  • No class restrictions: Teams cannot manipulate roles to hide skill.
  • Anti‑abuse enforcement: If a team or player receives a free move up and then disbands and reforms in their old division to farm easier prize money, TFCL will take action. Attempts to intentionally avoid rightful promotion will not be allowed.
  • Competitive integrity: Every division stays fair, balanced, and difficult to exploit.
